"One night, as I was listening to Ravel, I suddenly realized that the images I was looking at sounded exactly like the music looked! It was intoxicating to experience synesthesia in both directions at the same time. This film shows you what I hear with my eyes and see with my ears. The Music is "Adagio Assai" composed by Ravel and performed by Martha Argerich. I later found out that Ravel had the same kind of bi-directional synesthesia that I have."
"In our art there is something universal. If someone asked me 'What is art?' I would say art is patterns. In the same way that DNA is a pattern that could explain an entire species, there are patterns in nature that show up in my dreams and show up in my art. And maybe none of us are consciously aware of them."
